Bench

On August 18, 2022 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany "Bench" peaked.

Bench is the fourth edition of Andrés Gorzycki’s curated open-air-shows near the Main river in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Andrés and I conversed about in-between space, pubic space, space which calls to be occupied where an artist can inhabit. I chose the tip of a peninsula, where a small park overlooks the river. The park, tucked away in the Gutleutviertel neighborhood where you can hear the water cycle upon the concrete, splashing from the inlet. In this place I saw an opportunity to bridge objects, time, and people. For this edition, I reference the previous three editions of this curatorial project, including Sebastián Garbrecht's Magnet, Alina Perkins's Rope, and Maximiliano Siñani’s Stone. There is a sign, signalling boats on the water, but in doing so, blocks one of the stone slab bench’s view of the river. I tied the rope around this bench. I painted a white rectangle with a black vertical oval onto the sign’s post. I wheat-pasted an image of the stone bench’s top onto the sign obstructing the serene view. When the viewer sits, their view forward ties them back to their support. To sit and view, is to enter a portal of liminal space. Ideas of the past create a new context in the future. The space reflects connection and a desire to be observed in relation to a larger ecology and the blockages stopping it from doing so.
